Dr. Matthew Wolenski, a fellowship trained orthopaedist specializing in foot and ankle procedures. He is a native of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and studied and trained in various places along the eastern seaboard before returning to the area. In addition to bringing a new specialty to Brielle and to the entire area, Dr. Wolenski brings his lifelong passion for medicine. He recently gave evidence of this passion by taking time to answer the questions below.
How did you develop your interest in medicine, and in your specialty?
I always knew that I wanted to be a doctor. (Yes, sciences came easy to me in school). In high school, I became interested in orthopaedics, sports and rehabilitation. I wanted to recreate the quality of life for those who are injured from an accident or a sports injury, or bad arthritis or issues related to aging. I wanted to get people back to their routine daily life. In high school, I played football (at Delbarton, in Morristown.) As an undergraduate at Georgetown University, I was a rower. We were ranked in the top six nationwide in my senior year. During this time, I was able to see the difference that orthopaedics and surgery made to get people back to their activity following injuries. If I can help get athletes back on the playing field like they were pre-injury, it gives me great satisfaction and makes my work interesting. In addition to seeing the ability I had as an Orthopedic Surgeon to help athletes return to playing sports, I am also able to help all people with Foot and Ankle related problems, whether it be arthritis related to injuries or the aches and pains we all experience as we age. In fact, the majority of Foot and Ankle issues I see in practice are non-sports related.
When and why did you join Brielle Orthopedics?
I’m from Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County, so originally being born and raised New Jersey, and the fact my family is still here, is the reason to return. I lived in various different places which made me realize I like living here. I like the ocean, and have fond memories of the Jersey Shore. Brielle, and all three offices where I will practice, is a great group of doctors that fit the way I want to work—with a professionalism and standards with which I think people should practice.
What distinguishes your practice?
I’m bringing to Brielle, and to the area, the fact that I am a fellowship trained foot and ankle surgeon, as well as a specialist in post-traumatic reconstruction. This is a new and unique service that was not currently available to the Monmouth, Ocean and points south. In fact, there are very few specialtists in the United States who do total ankle replacement—which is performed for severe arthritis or injury. I am privileged to have trained with people that were part of the FDA trial to approve this procedure in the U.S. In fact, I have been lucky to train with some of the leaders in orthopaedics.
What are your goals?
My goal, and the reason that Brielle brought me on board, is to perform the complex foot and ankle procedures that were part of my fellowship training, and that were not previously available in the area. My vision is specifically for this area of treatment, and to get the word out that now we handle complicated foot and ankle issues.
