Sacroplasty

Improve your mobility. And your quality of life.1

Sacral insufficiency fractures (SIFs) are an often underdiagnosed condition in the elderly population, typically presenting with severe low back pain and may result in immobility.2

Benefits of the procedure

  • Pain relief1,3-7
  • Increased mobility1,5
  • Improved quality of life7
  • Low complication rate4
  • Typically an outpatient procedure

Potential risks

A 2019 analysis suggests that sacroplasty is safe and effective for the treatment of sacral fractures caused by osteoporosis or cancer.3

How it works8

A spine showing needles being inserted through a small incision in preparation for sacroplasty treatment

Before the procedure

Using x-ray guidance, one or more needles will be inserted into the sacrum through a small incision.

A spine showing bone cement being placed into the sacrum to help stabilize a fracture

During the procedure

The sacrum is filled with bone cement to stabilize the fracture. As it hardens, the cement forms an internal cast that holds the sacrum in place. The incision will typically be covered with a bandage.

After the procedure

You will lie on your back for a short period of time while the cement continues to harden. Your blood pressure and pulse will be monitored before you go home. If you notice any signs of wound infection, bleeding, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.
