Dr. Battaglia is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of sports injuries of all types, with a primary focus on arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee and shoulder. This includes treatment of rotator cuff and instability problems of the shoulder, as well as treatment of ligament, cartilage, and meniscal injuries of the knee. He is the leading cartilage surgeon in central New York, with experience in meniscus and articular cartilage transplant and cartilage regrowth techniques. He also specializes in complex ligamentous reconstruction, including revision surgery of failed ACL reonstructions, and rotator cuff repair.
Dr. Battaglia is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, and is one of a select few to have also received Subspecialty Board Certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. This certification is for those board-certified orthopaedic surgeons who have demonstrated qualifications in sports medicine beyond those expected of other orthopaedic surgeons by virtue of additional training, a practice characterized by a focus on sports medicine, and overall contributions to this field.
A native of central New York, Dr. Battaglia grew up in Marcellus, where he lettered in lacrosse, soccer, and basketball. He then attended Amherst College, Massachusetts, earning a degree in psychology and captaining the lacrosse and rugby teams. After graduating magna cum laude from medical school at the State University of New York at Buffalo, he completed orthopaedic residency at the University of Virginia, where he assisted in the care of both the UVA and James Madison University athletic teams. While in Virginia, he also earned a Master's Degree studying the effects of growth factors on tendon and bone healing. He then completed a fellowship in sports medicine and advanced arthroscopic surgery at the New England Baptist Hospital, one of the top orthopaedic hospitals in the country, where he served as a team physician for Harvard University and the Boston Celtics.
Dr. Battaglia is a partner with Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists, PC, and serves as director of sports medicine and director of the cartilage center for the group. He is head physician for numerous athletic teams, including Syracuse University football, Onondaga Community College, and the Syracuse Silver Knights professional soccer team. He is an active member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and the International Cartilage Research Society (ICRS). He has authored or co-authored more than 30 scientific articles and book chapters, and is a clinical instructor for AANA, teaching advanced arthroscopic methods to other physicians across the country.
