Dr. Jonathan B. Courtney is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who is fellowship trained in joint reconstruction surgery and sports medicine. His practice consists of lower extremity fracture care and surgery, total knee and hip replacement surgeries, revision knee and hip replacement surgeries and arthroscopic knee and hip surgery. He has trained on robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery as well as with patient-specific instrumentation. Dr. Courtney is an expert on the direct anterior hip replacement and has been teaching junior surgeons how to perform this technique for the last 7 years.
Dr. Courtney was born and raised in Hollywood, Florida. He attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. At the University of Miami, he was inducted into the Golden Key International Honor Society and was a University of Miami Honors Day “Honoree.” Following his undergraduate education, Dr. Courtney attended and graduated from the New York State Program at the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel-Aviv, Israel.
Dr. Courtney completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York. During residency, he also trained at Jacobi Medical Center-a level I trauma center caring for the Bronx and lower Westchester counties. During his orthopedic training, Dr. Courtney received extensive exposure to trauma care, adult reconstruction, sports medicine and general orthopedic surgery. During residency, Dr. Courtney won the Anatomy Award as well as the Seleznick Award for his research.
Dr. Courtney attended the prestigious Insall-Scott-Kelly Institute for Adult Reconstruction at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, New York. During his fellowship, he trained with some of the most world-renowned surgeons in adult reconstruction and sports medicine. He received extensive training in complex hip, knee and shoulder disorders.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Courtney returned to the Bronx, as an Attending Physician on staff at Montefiore Medical Center and as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. While at Montefiore, he performed over 1,000 surgeries, the majority of which were complex reconstructions utilizing the latest technology and techniques. He also served as a team physician to the Truman High School Football team as well as the Lehman College Athletic Department. As a physician on staff, he was responsible for medical student education as well as the surgical education of orthopedic residents.
Dr. Courtney moved to Boca Raton in 2016 and in a few short years, has become the busiest hip and knee surgeon in the community. He continues to teach medical students, residents, and other surgeons on advanced techniques in hip and knee replacement surgery. He sits on the Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Executive Operating Room Committee as well as the Surgical Site Infection task force. He was named Boca Regional’s “Physician of the Month” for May 2019 in recognition for his commitment to his patients. He recently published a chapter for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Surgical Insights course on Knee anatomy and biomechanics.
Dr. Courtney has published and presented his research all over the world. He has done research on ACL reconstruction surgery; minimizing blood loss during joint replacements; patella resurfacing during total knee replacements; hip surgery in morbidly obese patients; metal allergy in orthopedic patients; the establishment of a joint replacement center and its impact on patient care; as well as a host of other topics. He continues to perform research on the latest treatments and technologies to better serve his patients.
Dr. Courtney is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, American College of Sports Medicine, The Insall Club and the Police Benevolent Association, where he was awarded as a distinguished provider.
Dr. Courtney is married with three sons. His wife, Shira, is a pediatrician in the community. In his free time, Dr. Courtney enjoys being with his family, playing basketball, scuba diving and rooting for the Miami Dolphins, Hurricanes and Heat.T
