Dr. Christopher Lena focuses his practice on the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and knee injuries as well as sports related injuries. He performs arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery on the shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, and ankle.
Following medical school and an Orthopedic Residency at the University of Connecticut, he completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Yale University and then was invited to serve as a Clinical Instructor in the Yale Sports Medicine Department. Dr. Lena joined Orthopedic Associates of Hartford in 2001. During the last twelve years, he has performed well over six thousand surgical cases.
Since arriving in the Hartford area, Dr. Lena has helped to take care of the Hartford Wolfpack Hockey team, Connecticut Crush women¹s football team and he is the team doctor for the Wethersfield High School Athletic Department. He will be providing orthopedic coverage for USA Gymnastics Tour of Champions Summer 2013 while they are in Hartford. He has been named among America¹s Top Docs by US News and World Report and Castle Connolly 2009-2012.
Dr. Lena is a member of numerous academic societies including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the Connecticut Orthopedic Society and the Hartford County Medical Association.
Dr. Lena continues to be involved in the educational aspect of orthopedics with additional subspecialty certification in sports medicine and completion of the recertification process in 2012. He actively participates in the education and training of orthopedic residents as an Associate Clinical Instructor of Orthopedics for the University of Connecticut Department of Orthopedics. He is an Associate Master Instructor for the learning center courses for the Arthroscopy Association of North America where he helps surgeons from around the world acquire new techniques and surgical skills. He serves as the Orthopedic liaison for the Center for Education Simulation and Innovation (CESI). This will be a simulation center for training and innovation in arthroscopic techniques.
Dr. Lena serves in many administrative roles including sitting on the Joint Advisory Committee (JAC) overseeing development of the new Connecticut Orthopedic Institute at Hartford Hospital and he will be the service line leader for the Sports Medicine Program at this new institute. He is also a member of the board of Orthopedic Holdings which directly oversees two area orthopedic surgery centers.
A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dr. Lena was a Collegiate All-American Rugby player and a 1999 inductee into the Dartmouth College Athletic Hall of Fame. He currently enjoys cycling, skiing and spending time on the Long Island Sound with his family.
