Dr. David P. Lustenberger is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from St. Xavier High School, where he was a National Merit Finalist and received graduation department awards in Biology and German. He received his B.S. degree in Biology from The Ohio State University where he graduated with honors. He was part of the Early Admissions Pathway to Medical School and so received his M.D. degree, with honors, from The Ohio State University College of Medicine only seven years after entering his undergraduate education.
He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Virginia Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program, where received the Orthopaedic In-Training Examination Award for the highest class score in 2013, 2015, and in 2016. During his final year at the University of Virginia, he was chosen by the department leaders to act as the Administrative Chief Resident for the Orthopaedic Surgery Program.
Instead of entering into orthopaedic practice directly after his residency training, Dr. Lustenberger chose to complete an additional year of fellowship specialty training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
His interest in becoming an orthopaedic surgeon stemmed in part from his own experiences as an athlete, where he and many teammates needed orthopaedic care. In high school, he was part of the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, and in his senior year won a Silver Medal in the US Rowing Youth National Championships.
Dr. Lustenberger specializes in shoulder surgery, sports medicine, and general orthopaedics. He chose the shoulder as his area of specialty because it allows him to help patients across a broad spectrum. He is passionate about having a variety of ways to help people with problems such as the young athlete with shoulder instability, the middle-aged patient with the rotator cuff problems, and the older patient with shoulder arthritis.
In addition, he is well-versed in fracture care, general orthopaedics, and joint replacements. He is dedicated to providing evidence-based care to his patients.
Dr. Lustenberger served as varsity rowing coach for Westerville Crew from 2005-2011, and is also an Eagle Scout. In his free time, he enjoys hiking and kayaking, and he sees patients in the Montgomery, Fairfield, and Lebanon offices
