In 2017, Elie Ghanem, M.D., joined the UAB Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopaedics, as an Assistant Professor.
Following completion of his medical education at the American University of Beirut, Dr. Ghanem spent two years in orthopaedic clinical research at the Rothman Institute of Philadelphia under the mentorship of Javad Parvizi, M.D., who is widely recognized as a leader of joint infection research. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and a year-long Joint Replacement Fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. Ghanem’s clinical interests include anterior and posterior total hip arthroplasty and gap balancing techniques for total knee replacements. His research focuses on outcomes after primary and revision joint replacements with an emphasis on joint infection diagnostics and treatment. As a UAB faculty member, Dr. Ghanem looks forward to exploring the effects of using biofilm in prevention and treatment for infection and translating basic research into usable operating room techniques.
