Board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Joey Romero, specializes in adult reconstruction of the hip and knee, including complex primary and revision joint replacement surgery. He has particular expertise in robotic and computer-assisted joint replacement, minimally invasive techniques, muscle sparring anterior hip replacement, partial knee replacement, arthroplasty in young active patients and short-stay with rapid-recovery joint replacement. His practice is committed to providing operative and non-operative treatment plans that are tailored to each patient's individual needs with a focus on relieving pain, restoring function and improving quality of life.
Dr. Romero graduated from the University of Texas in Austin where he studied Human Biology and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Following college, he earned his medical degree at the University of Texas McGovern School of Medicine in Houston where he graduated amongst the top of his class and was elected the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed his orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and completed his fellowship training at the world-renowned Cornell University Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. There he worked alongside world leaders in hip and knee replacement to master his craft and learn the most cutting-edge advancements in the field of arthroplasty. Throughout training he has received numerous awards and recognition for his achievements in research, education, clinical and surgical patient care.
Dr. Romero serves as an elected reviewer for multiple orthopaedic journals, has authored numerous publications, earned multiple research awards/grants and presented his research nationally and internationally. In 2020 Dr. Romero was presented the prestigious Otto Aufranc Award from the Hip Society as well as the Lance Peters Award from the Hospital for Special Surgery for his research contributions to the field of Orthopedics. Dr. Romero currently serves as the vice chairman of the orthopedic department at St. David's Medical Center and he is an affiliate faculty member for Dell Medical School where he provides instruction and mentorship to surgeons in training.
Dr. Romero and his wife, Bridgette, love raising their two sons here in Austin. He has a passion for international medical missions, enjoys traveling with his family, being active in their church, fishing, mountain biking and attending Longhorn sporting events.
