Amgad M. Haleem A. Amin, MD, PhD, is a fellowship-trained Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in Foot and Ankle Surgery. Dr. Haleem also takes special interest in complex lower extremity deformity correction, joint preservation and reconstruction. His current research is focused on cartilage-preserving procedures of major weight-bearing joints of the lower extremities (ankles, knees, and hips), with particular emphasis on the use of biologics such as stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Dr. Haleem’s research also involves 3D Printing and Bioprinting for orthopedic applications with the OU Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering Group where he has multiple collaborations with biomedical engineers in OU and other regional and national medical centers. He also leads the OU Lower Limb Joint Preservation Program with various cartilage transplant procedures.
Dr. Haleem earned his Medical Degree (with Honors) from Cairo University School of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt, the same institution through which he completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency. In 2008, Dr. Haleem was awarded a grant for Excellence in Scientific Achievement, allowing him to complete his PhD in stem cell-based cartilage regeneration at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
After successfully defending his PhD thesis entitled "The Use of Human Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Treatment of Articular Cartilage Defects of the Knee," Dr. Haleem continued his specialized education and training with a fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery and another fellowship in Lower Limb Complex Reconstruction at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), Weill Medical College Cornell University, New York, NY; a fellowship in Orthopedic Adult Reconstructive Surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX; and a fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at the University of South Florida and Florida Orthopedic Institute in Tampa, FL.
Throughout his fellowship training, Dr. Haleem earned the privilege of caring for foot/ankle and lower extremity sports injuries in elite professional dancers and athletes with his mentors. Notably, that list includes dancers of the New York City Ballet, NBA players of the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets, NFL player of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and University of South Florida collegiate athletes.
In January of 2016, Dr. Haleem obtained his Orthopedic MD, PhD (the degree awarded by the Egyptian Orthopedic Board) through the Cairo University College of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt.
In addition to a flourishing medical career, Dr. Haleem holds the rare distinction of having played professional basketball for the Gezira Sporting Club of Egypt (one of the major basketball teams of Egypt and national basketball champions). Upon his retirement as a player, Dr. Haleem put his unique blend of knowledge in basketball and medicine as he served as Team Physician for the National (Al-Ahly) Club of Egypt, the country’s biggest sports franchise and national champions.
While his days as a professional athlete have now given way to an invigorating career in Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Haleem makes time to enjoy his favorite athletic pursuits and pastimes, including, biking, swimming, and squash.
