Joel Matta Steadman Clinic Vail, CO Dr. Klaus Siebenrock & Dr. Moritz Tannast at Inselspital, University of Bern, Switzerland
Dr. Tatka completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Stony Brook University Medical Center in Long Island, where he was elected and served as Chief Orthopedic Surgery Resident, overseeing the program of 25 orthopedic residents. While at Stony Brook, he developed a passion for being of service to those in need and has performed surgeries internationally through his pro-bono work in Nicaragua and Peru.
Each year, Dr. Joel Matta, regarded as the pioneer of the Anterior Approach to Hip Replacement surgery, chooses only one fellow amongst US and International applicants. After completing residency, Dr. Tatka was chosen to work alongside Dr. Matta at the world-renowned Steadman Clinic, in Vail, Colorado. Dr. Tatka credits this intensive fellowship with Dr. Matta as a truly formative experience in the elevation and specialization of his surgical skills. While at the Steadman Clinic, Dr. Tatka’s training was further augmented by other world-leading surgeons such as Dr. Marc Philippon and Dr. Raymond Kim.
Following his fellowship in Colorado, he was selected to work under the auspices of Dr. Klaus Siebenrock and Dr. Moritz Tannast at Inselspital, University of Bern, Switzerland. This additional training in Switzerland was integral in his mastery of hip preservation techniques, allowing patients to gain increased function and eradicate pain without the need of a joint replacement. He also further refined his training in the Anterior Approach to Hip Replacement, an elegant and highly sought-after approach to total hip replacement as patients enjoy such additional benefits as a quicker recovery, less post-operative pain and a decreased risk of dislocation since it is both minimally-invasive and a muscle sparing technique.
Dr. Tatka is also sought out by patients for his ability to perform the Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO). This is a surgery that can spare an adolescent or adult patient with hip dysplasia from needing a hip replacement, relieving their pain and allowing them to regain function of their native hip. He also performs procedures that address complex hip labral injuries, femoroacetabular impingement, acute and chronic injuries including athletic injuries and developmental deformities of the hip and pelvis.
Dr. Tatka’s medical and surgical expertise combined with his personal background in ski racing, led him to become an official U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Physician. This prestigious appointment has afforded him the opportunity to accompany and tend to medal-winning athletes as they compete in such countries as China, Austria, the United States and Turkey to name a few.
Dr. Tatka is passionate about his profession and particularly about mentorship. While an Associate Professor at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, he trained residents and helped oversee the specialization of hip and knee fellows. Dr. Tatka has published numerous articles in prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals pertaining to non-operative vs. operative approaches to hip maladies, operating-room optimization and the Anterior Approach to Total Hip Replacement surgery.
Dr. Tatka is always very thoughtful in his approach and treats every patient as if they were family. He considers it a privilege to care for patients and is dedicated to providing excellent care and superb results.
