Dr. Alberto Carli specializes in minimally invasive joint replacement involving the hip and the knee. He treats patients suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis, hip dysplasia, hip fracture, and bowlegged or knock-knee deformity. Dr. Carli also assesses previous joint replacement surgeries that have been complicated by fractures, dislocations or infections.
Dr. Carli employs rapid-recovery protocols to help patients mobilize on the same day as surgery. He is experienced in performing outpatient (same-day discharge) surgery on eligible patients, customizing treatments for each patient. His priority is to ensure that patients understand their diagnosis, feel empowered in making the decision to proceed with surgery, and feel satisfied with their recovery.
Dr. Carli completed medical school and orthopedic residency training at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. During his training, he also completed a Master of Science in the field of experimental surgery and received both national and international awards for research on how bone attaches to orthopedic implants. Dr. Carli went on to complete two clinical fellowships in joint replacement surgery at HSS. He was then selected for the prestigious Maurice Muller Fellowship, offered by the Hip Society each year to only one surgeon from North America. This permitted him to travel to Europe for six months to work with and learn from leading surgeons in the field of joint replacement surgery.
Upon returning to North America, Dr. Carli led a complex joint replacement surgery service at the Ottawa Hospital in Canada and was recognized by his patients three times for outstanding, empathic care. Dr. Carli was recruited as an attending surgeon at HSS to continue providing outstanding clinical care and perform high quality research.
Dr. Carli is a surgeon-scientist, dedicating his non-clinical time to performing scientific research based on improving joint replacement design and preventing infections. He has published over fifty papers, has been recognized as an outstanding young investigator by the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and is a reviewer for seven medical journals. Dr. Carli lectures to medical students and orthopedic residents, and has been recognized for his teaching skills throughout his career.
Dr. Carli holds regular office hours in both Manhattan and Paramus, NJ.
