Theodore B. Shybut, MD, attended college at Harvard University, where he competed in intercollegiate lightweight crew and ran a 2:45 in the Boston Marathon. He completed medical school at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.
Dr. Shybut completed his residency at the New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases, now called NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, where his sports medicine experience included the care of NYU athletes. He then undertook a sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. During his fellowship, Dr. Shybut obtained in-depth exposure to professional and elite sports, assisting in the care of the NFL Texans, MLB Astros, MLS Dynamo, NBA Rockets, and NCAA University of Houston.
Dr. Shybut was recruited to join the faculty at Baylor, where he spent over a decade in academic practice, performing a high volume of complex and reconstructive knee, shoulder, and elbow surgeries while training residents and fellows and performing research. Dr. Shybut has become a national leader in the field of orthopedic sports medicine by pioneering surgical techniques, publishing in leading orthopedic journals, and presenting at national meetings.
During his time in Houston, he was routinely named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, Texas Super Doctor, and Houstonia Magazine Top Doctor. At Baylor, he was recognized with an award for excellence in patient care.
As an avid athlete himself, Dr. Shybut has dedicated his career to the care of injured athletes and active people. In Houston, he spent time at the Veterans Affairs hospital and performed the first BEAR ACL repair in the VA system. He was the head team physician for the Major League Rugby (MLR) Houston SaberCats.
Dr. Shybut is involved in orthopedic society leadership for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), including an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Subspecialty Certification, and he is a Fellow of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), a unique distinction of leadership and advancement in the field of arthroscopic surgery.
Dr. Shybut is excited to bring his surgical expertise to the prestigious Southern California Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship Program faculty and serve as team physician at College of the Canyons and multiple Santa Clarita Valley high schools.
When not at work, Dr. Shybut enjoys time with his family, running, working out, travel, skiing, and rock music.
