Peter Bonutti, MD, is an orthopedic - reconstructive surgeon, inventor, author, professor, consultant, and entrepreneur noted for his commitment to his patients, community and specialty. Through the Bonutti Clinic, Dr. Bonutti brings world-class musculoskeletal care and cutting edge research to Illinois, attracting patients from 41 states and 6 countries to Effingham, Illinois. Founded in 1989, with the goal of establishing a subspecialty musculoskeletal care center integrating innovative surgical techniques, clinical practice, rehabilitation, diagnostics and research in a rural community. The Bonutti Clinic and it’s science center, Bonutti Research have grown to over 200 employees and has developed products and technologies used world-wide.
Recognized as a pioneer in Minimally Invasive Surgery, Dr. Bonutti holds 250 US patents, with 90 more pending. Dr. Bonutti has developed and licensed technology to major corporations including Hitachi, Medtronic, Kyphon, Covidien, US Surgical, Biomet, Arthrocare, Synthes and Stryker. His innovations in Minimally Invasive Knee Arthroplasty were credited in the Annual Report for Stryker Corporation, one of the top 50 companies in the S&P 500 according to Business Week.
Dr. Bonutti maintains an extremely busy clinical and surgical practice, averaging nearly 1,000 surgical procedures per year. He also maintains an academic interest as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Arkansas and has over 100 published articles. He lectures internationally and has trained over 100 surgeons on his surgical techniques. As a graduate of the University of Chicago, Dr. Bonutti earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic training at the Cleveland Clinic with additional fellowship training internationally in Australia, New Zealand, Austria and Canada. Dr. Bonutti is the founder of Biomax Rehabilitation Inc., Bonutti Research, Joint Active Systems, Multitak, and Unity Ultrasonic. His surgical and research teams continue to identify new technology for patient care, diagnostics, and surgical management, focusing on less invasive techniques and innovations for surgical care.
